THE CRAFT EXPLAINED

OFFSET

Using metal (Aluminum) plates to transfer an image or text to a rubber blanket, which then “offsets” the art to paper. Traditionally used for the majority of our projects. With the advances in digital, offset has been redefined for longer runs and spot color (Pantone) color matching .

DIGITAL

Broad term covering small format (12.5x19”) to large (4x8’ sheets and 9’x endless rolls) Either inkjet or electrostatic, digital printing affords the ability to print short runs on almost any surface.  Depending on quantity, digital is often the first choice for many projects.

SCREEN PRINTING

Among the oldest techniques, screen gives us the greatest range of materials we can print onto. Additionally, the ink film thickness offers a richness unlike any other print process.

LETTERPRESS

This is what Gutenberg invented. Printing from raised surface type or art. Historically a “kiss impression” which is invisible ton the touch was the goal. Today designers like to see the ink pressed deep into the material.

STEEL DIE ENGRAVING

Perhaps the finest detail possible.
A true craft, engraving is an expensive and tome consuming process. An excellent tool for printing opaque ink on dark materials. Size limitations and cost often relegate this fantastic technique for only very special projects.

EMBOSSING

Single level or multilevel, pushing a shape into blank paper “blind embossed” or registered to print. Depending on the design either a brass or copper die with a corresponding counter is used. Debossing uses the same technique except the work is pressed down, into the sheet.

FOIL STAMPING

Similar to embossing, artwork is transferred from a heated die with a foil overlay onto paper or board. Stamping can be on the surface, deep pressed or embossed out. We have a broad range of colored foils well beyond silver and gold.

DIE CUTTING

Metal dies (giant razor blades) are shaped to exact trim for irregular cut finishing. Everything from a pocket folder to a perfect circle needs a die cut. We create countless custom dies for a wide range of specialty finishing.
